Around January 2024, I found myself drawn into the world of comics, initially as an unintended consequence of a visit to my local comic book store. My main purpose for going was to pick up some comics for my granddaughter, hoping they might encourage her to read more. However, what I expected to be a simple shopping trip turned into the beginning of a creative and artistic journey for me.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr - Cover

Prior to this, I had been engaged in drawing and painting for about three years. I had taken up these activities as a way to unwind without the constant presence of screens. I found the process of creating visual art to be both therapeutic and rewarding, allowing me to express emotions and ideas in a way that felt natural and fulfilling. My visit to the comic book store, however, opened up an entirely new avenue of artistic appreciation and storytelling that I had not previously considered.

Like many people unfamiliar with the medium, I had assumed that comics were dominated by superhero stories. While these undoubtedly have their place, I quickly realised that the world of comics was far broader and more diverse than I had imagined. The store shelves were filled with publications from a range of independent publishers, many of which showcased truly innovative storytelling and breathtaking artwork. It was not just the narratives that caught my attention, but the exceptional work of artists and colourists who brought these stories to life with remarkable skill and creativity.

One of the first comics that really captivated me was The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. The combination of its unique premise and stunning artwork made a lasting impression. The story explores deep philosophical themes while being visually striking, a perfect example of how comics can be a sophisticated and evocative art form. I found myself completely immersed in the experience, not just reading the story but absorbing every panel, every colour choice, and every artistic decision made by the creators.

From that point onward, my interest in comics expanded rapidly. I started seeking out other works that showcased a similar level of artistic brilliance and narrative depth. The more I explored, the more I realised how underrated many of these publications were. The artistic talent in the industry was astonishing, yet often overlooked in favour of more mainstream, blockbuster-style content. I became particularly interested in the role of colourists, whose work is crucial in setting the mood, enhancing storytelling, and creating visual impact.

Reading comics became more than just a pastime; it became an extension of my creative interests. I found inspiration in the way artists combined line work, colour, and composition to tell stories in a way that no other medium could quite replicate. The mix of visual and narrative artistry resonated deeply with me, reinforcing my appreciation for the immense creativity involved in the making of comics.

What began as a simple gesture to encourage my granddaughter to read turned into a passion for a form of art that I had previously overlooked. I now see comics as a boundless medium where artistic expression and storytelling merge in the most imaginative ways. And so, my journey into this vibrant world continues.
